Matt Aberman

"it’s better to dress different and be ridiculed, then being the same as everyone else."

The power of the social media sparked the beginning of his fashion journey, and he hasn't looked back since. The 19-year-old from New Jersey has a strong streetwear style with a slight twist. See why the New York culture has influenced his style, and how risk-taking is just the norm to him, all in our conversation with Matt.

What are your interests/hobbies?

I like designing clothes, drawing, making designs in Photoshop, and playing basketball with my friends.

How long have you been into fashion?

I’ve always liked dressing different than everyone else in my school, but I really got into the fashion scene in the summer.

What got you into fashion?

My good friends from Philly, Don, and Malc. After we met and Instagram and linked up for the first time, I started to take it seriously because I loved how they dressed and accessorized.

How would you describe your sense of style?

Unique, inspired heavily from Ian Connor & Travis Scott. I like incorporating streetwear with articles of clothing that aren’t generally considered to be “fashionable”.

How has living in _____ shaped your style and your fashion sense?

Where I’m from originally, people don’t tend to dress like me. I remember the first time I wore camo pants to school everyone started to make fun of me. It made me realize it’s better to dress different and be ridiculed, then being the same as everyone else.

Where do you find your inspiration for your style? And what influences you the most?

I find my inspiration for clothes from the “New York Culture”. I fell in love with the culture there. People in the city who dress different then everyone else tend to influence me the most, because of their “I don’t care” attitude is so appealing.

Who is your fashion spirit animal/who inspires you? And why? (artist, athlete, actor etc.)

Ian Connor. His “I do whatever I want” attitude is very appealing, and always has been. I’ve looked up to his sense of art and style since I even got into fashion.

What are your favorite fashion pieces? (hats, belts, hoodies etc.)

Rothco camo pants over everything. They add such a unique dynamic to an outfit.

What are your favorite brands?

Palace, Comme Des Garcon, Supreme.

What current fashion trends are you loving right now?

I love that Nike SBs are making a comeback, they are an amazing shoe.

Which ones are you hating?

Dad shoes for sure. Those giant bulky shoes honestly just look disgusting on any outfit.

The most important piece of an outfit is ____? Why?

Shoes definitely. They really show how you take pride in your presence.

Do you have a dream fashion piece? (a specific coat, belt, pants etc.)

Gucci Aces. Those shoes are just so clean and sleek. While adding a bang to your outfit.

What are your goals and aspirations with fashion? Where do you see yourself ending up?

My goal is to break barriers and stereotypes of how one can dress. I don’t really know where I will end up, I just hope it involves success.
