Freddie Washington - Rising Icon

Freddie Washington

Freddie Washington is a 33-year-old from Brooklyn New York who has literally been dressing since birth. We had a conversation with the NYC activist about some of his favorite fashion pieces and how his style has no price tag. Take a peek into our conversation and see what are some of the top brands his into as well as where he draws his inspirations, all in our conversation with Freddie Washington.

What are your interests/hobbies?
My interests include music, fashion, activism, and politics.

Current Occupation or school that you attend? (if you do not feel like sharing you do not have to)
I do investigative work for local government as my “day job”. I also do freelance Public Relations work, sing and write music and I’m venturing into writing as well.

How long have you been into fashion?
It’s honestly hard to give a specific period in which it started because I’ve loved fashion for as long as I can remember.

What got you into fashion?
I would probably say, my parents and godparents. My parents are very stylish people, as are my godparents. As a baby, I have pictures of me in some really amazing outfits, some of them seemingly timeless. I think watching them and having them dress me so well helped me develop a love of fashion and eventually develop my own style.

How would you describe your sense of style?
It honestly varies. I think I dress for how I feel in the moment. I love high-end fashion, but I also love finding affordable discount pieces that other people may not have. I can wear something that costs $5 and love it just as much as I do another piece in my closet that costs $500.

How has living in _____ shaped your style and your fashion sense?
NYC living has definitely impacted my style and fashion sense; NYC is widely considered one of the fashion capitals of the world. There’s such a wide variety of fashion options to choose from and that helps in developing a style of your own. Additionally, I think that with NYC definitively experiencing all four seasons, and fashion options changing drastically throughout each, it allows you to have fun and show something different every few months.

Where do you find your inspiration for your style? And what influences you the most?
My style is really inspired by my mood. There are times I wake up and I’m in a very relaxed mood and I’ll probably wear something a little more sporty (dressing it up of course), and then there are times I’m “feeling myself” and I’ll put on something more high end. Another way my style is influenced by my mood is that my mood can sometimes improve based on how I feel about what I have on. There have been times I’ve had a rough day and I’ll come home and change to go out to meet up with friends, my outfit lifts my spirits making me feel amazing.

Who is your fashion spirit animal/who inspires you? And why? (artist, athlete, actor etc.)
I don’t know if I would quite call her my fashion spirit animal, but I love Rihanna on the female end. She takes risks, sometimes doing things that initially seem outlandish, but in the end, it seems to always work. I think that’s what fashion and style are about: the ability and willingness to take risks. On the male end, I would probably say Odell Beckham Jr. I love his style because not only does he take risks as well, but he has this swag (I know I’m tired of the word too, but it fits) that just brings it all together. Even when he is wearing sweats and a T-shirt, there something about how he wears it that makes it look great.

What are your favorite fashion pieces? (hats, belts, hoodies etc.)
Dark blue jeans. I think they are crucial to anyone’s closet. A nice well-fitting pair of dark blue jeans can be dressed up or dressed down so well. It’s the perfect piece to wear with almost anything almost anywhere. You can literally wear them on a casual Friday to work, for a night out with friends, to an amusement park, to brunch, on a date and even to church depending on what you pair them with.

What are your favorite brands?

Probably Michael Kors, Gucci, Ralph Lauren, and Armani Exchange. I also like American Eagle a-lot, because their jeans fit me so well. I get a lot of my suits from Banana Republic, and I actually have a secret that many people don’t believe when I tell them, but it’s so true: I love shopping at Target.

What current fashion trends are you loving right now? Which ones are you hating?
I love the return of the fanny pack/waist bag. I was wearing a few of them last summer and people were looking at me strangely because no one had been wearing them in years, but that’s all you see these days. I love how fashion always comes back in style.

The most important piece of an outfit is ____? Why?
Confidence. At the end of the day, you’re the one who has to wear it, and if you’re the one wearing it, you’re the one who needs to love it. No matter how amazing an outfit is, there will always be someone who doesn’t love it, either because it’s simply not their style or because they’re genuinely a “hater”. Either way, when you own the look, even if it’s eccentric, loud or considered poor fashion, you will look better in it.

Do you have a dream fashion piece? (a specific coat, belt, pants etc.)
A Rolex.

What are your goals and aspirations with fashion? Where do you see yourself ending up?
I just want to continue to have fun with it. If in the process, I attain notoriety of some kind, that’s amazing.
